Character Dance

The term character dance is used to describe all dance which is neither ballet nor ballroom, such as folk dance, religious dance, soft-shoe and other vaudeville dance, traditional dance and eccentric dance in comedy. In ballet, character dancers often appear in divertissements: displays of virtuosity lateral to the main action of the ballet, for example the suite of national dances in Tchaikovsky\'s The Nutcracker is typical.
