Grammatology

Grammatology (Greek, ‘study of the written symbol’), in literary criticism, is the name given by Jacques Derrida and his followers to the ‘general science of writing’. The idea is that spoken words have a natural relationship with what they mean, and that writing is separate from or lateral to this. (This is different from the traditional view, that writing is an instrument or conduit of the spoken word.) KMcL
