History Painting

History Painting, in Western art, is a genre of painting in which scenes taken principally from the Bible, mythology and classical literature are treated in an elevated and morally edifying way. The historical genre, which stylistically is associated with, but not identical to, the Grand Manner, was the preferred genre of academic artists who regarded it as the highest expression of art. Notable practitioners include Poussin, Charles Lebrun, Benjamin West and David. MG PD
