Sensations are private in the sense that one knows immediately which sensations one has, and one does not need to infer which sensations one has from anything else, whereas no-one else can know which sensations one has immediately, for they must infer which sensations one has from one\'s behaviour.

Beliefs and desires seem to be unlike sensations in this respect. For one must sometimes infer which beliefs and desires one has from one\'s behaviour, in the same manner that others must infer what beliefs and desires one has from one\'s behaviour. AJ
